How Did You Celebrate National Trails Day?
Yesterday was National Trails Day. We spent our morning hiking in the hills near our home, taking a docent-led hike to the Sinks, an eroded red rock formation in the Santa Ana Mountains, near the Cleveland National Forest. The Sinks were interesting enough to see, and along the way we checked out some animal tracks and scat, including mule deer, bobcats, oppossum, rabbits and raccoon, but saw no actual animals other than a few birds. The animals were smart enough to stay in the shade. It must have been 95° or more. When we started, I carried a backpack that was heavy with several liters of water. By the time we got back to the car, I was carrying mostly empty bottles.
Later, hot and exhausted, we went for a swim at our local association pool. We really like our association pool. Except when someone shits in the pool and forces it closed for three days, it's a great place to swim or sunbathe. It is huge, with lots of umbrellas and lounges, and when you go there on a weekend, it is full of festive, happy swimmers who contribute to the "hotel pool" feel of the place. It's like going on vacation, even when you only have two hours of vacation time available.
Finally, at the end of the afternoon, we had a Girl Scouts Award ceremony. My oldest daughter has earned her Bronze Award, the highest honor a Junion Girl Scout can achieve. Way to go, pumpkin.
After that, we thought about going to Brea for St. Angela Merici's annual SummerFest, which was going to feature a free concert by that fat dude who won American Idol a few shows ago, but we were dead beat tired. Tonight, the show features Peter Frampton, who now is so pathetic that he plays free shows at local church festivals. Rick Springfield was equally pathetic on Friday.
Today, we're off to the Tustin Chili Cookoff.
Actually, last year Frampton put on a really good show! The gentleman who books him and many other bands just happens to be a parishoner at St. Angela's. He does paying gigs too.
