Tuesday Travel Photo (No. 191)
This is the Circus, in Basseterre, the capital city of Saint Kitts. Basseterre was made capital of the island in 1727, following the British expulsion of the French. The Circus is a roundabout in the middle of town, built in 1867, and modelled after Piccadilly Circus in London. In the middle of it stands the Clock Tower, also known as the Berkeley Memorial, built in 1883 to honor Thomas B.H. Berkeley, a local citizen of note. One block east of the Circus is Independence Square, originally called Pall Mall Square, which originally served as the island's slave market. Some of my earlier photos from St. Kitt's can be found here, here and here, but if you judge a place by its postcards, this is the signature photo spot on the island.
The clock itself, by the way, is busted. I took this picture around 3:25 p.m., local time.
