This is my favorite time of the year to read the newspaper. Every day, there is something new about college football. My team got a bit of good news today when it was reported that Hershel Dennis will be reinstated. Dennis was projected to be the starting tailback at the beginning of the year, but apparently decided that it would be less cool to be the starting tailback on the number one football team in the country than to bring a drunken barfing girl into an after-curfew party where minors were drinking and smoking pot, so she could be potentially sexually assaulted. Ordinarily, I don't like to, you know, judge another person's choices, but this one might have been disastrous. His replacements, Reggie Bush and LenDale White, have had monster games. The carries might be thin upon Hershel's return.
I missed the USC-CSU game last week on TV. I can't complain too much, as I was 50 rows up from the 17 yard line during the game, but I like to watch the games on TiVo later, checking out the key plays, interviews and special features (the rest gets bloop, bloop, blooped forward). If my seats are really good, I like to spot myself on the screen. Sadly, my TiVo looks like it might have died. So no TiVo'd game. So I was checking out 1st & 11, and I read that Matt Leinart was apologizing for the shirt he wore during his interview shown during the game on ABC. I was immediately curious. Matt did not discuss the content on his blog, so I had to turn to another source -- http://www.collegefootballnews.com. There it was, a ways down the column.
"Thank you ABC censors for letting this go … Was that really a "F(Trojan head where the U would be)CK the B.C.S." T-shirt that Matt Leinart was wearing during the nationally televised, prime time halftime feature on the star USC quarterback? Cool."
I agree. Don't apologize to me, Matt.
It remains to be seen whether this string of wins is a fluke, but so far, I am shocked by the following trail:
Stanford > BYU
BYU > Notre Dame
Notre Dame > Michigan
Therefore, Stanford > Michigan. Or not.
I keep hoping that USC's two main rivals for the hearts and minds of poll voters will be beaten soon. LSU almost lost -- deserved to lose -- to Oregon State. And they face Auburn on Saturday. But they are probably not going to play because of Hurricane Ivan, which has already caused the Cal-Southern Miss. game to be postponed. Oklahoma, meanwhile, is playing Oregon, also known as the only school to suffer the indignity of losing a Rose Bowl to Harvard. Two weeks ago, I thought Oregon might do the Pac-10 proud on Saturday, but after their embarrassing loss to Indiana last week, I'm not counting on it.
In case you haven't been watching, look at these unbelievable satellite photos of Ivan: eye shot; and broad shot. And the first hurricane pictures are coming in from Grand Cayman, and it got its ass whupped. Meanwhile, Florida may have dodged Ivan, but here comes Jeanne.
I'm looking forward to the time when the only Hurricanes in the news are from UM.
