The Sports Illustrated jinx does not just extend to the cover photo. In the August 18, 2004 issue, SI featured an article (The Little School That Can't Be Beat) about the amazing 151 game winning streak by the football program at De la Salle High School in Concord, California. De La Salle had not lost a game since the December 1991 North Coast Section championship game. In his 26 years as head coach, Bob Ladouceur had more undefeated seasons (17) than losses (14).
After an offseason that including Ladouceur suffering a heart attack and their star player from last year getting shot in the streets just two days before leaving for the University of Oregon, De la Salle had their national record winning streak snapped by Bellevue High, Washington state's 3A three-time defending champion, in a 39-20 loss Saturday night at Qwest Field in front of 24,987 fans. Bellevue was led by a 14-year-old sophomore quarterback who threw no passes.
So, in one day, the longest winning streak in high school football is gone, and the somewhat less impressive Division I college football winning streak of Miami Ohio is gone, too. Michigan's true freshman quarterback, Chad Henne, beat the RedHawks by 33 points yesterday. It wasn't an upset, though. Michigan was well favored. Surprisingly, every single team in the top 25 won this week, if they played.
May Boise State fall next.
