Born on the Fourth of July is, objectively speaking, a great movie. But it didn't entertain me or provide the kind of pleasant distraction that I am looking for when I buy a full-price cinema ticket. I don't want to pay money just because a film is objectively excellent.

If a movie is going to bum me out with something tragic, I want something really positive at the end, like the rescue of the son in Life is Beautiful, or the workers and their descendants who appear at the end of Schindler's List. The end of Born on the 4th didn't bring me out of its funk, so I ain't never watchin' that garbage again.

I actually liked Born on the Fourth of July, but you're right--it truly was depressing. I haven't seen Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
