Because it may seem inconvenient to one candidate or another, people are arguing over whether the old definition of a recession should still apply. Depending upon who you ask, we either entered a recession last year, or we haven't even had one. Let's here it for two percent growth and a return to sane housing prices! If you are getting foreclosed on, pretend I didn't type that.
Lindsay Lohan is mad about L.A.'s police chief making a comment about her "apparently going gay." It has people asking whether a police chief should be allowed to comment about the personal relationship of famous paparazzi targets. What people ought to be asking is this: could Lindsay have scored a much hotter lesbian girlfriend than the one she bagged?
How pathetic is it that the website www.schoolteachernews.com has an extensive "scandals" page?
I tend not to see the Virgin Mary every time I see an image that vaguely looks like a stick figure in a cape, but some people do. According to a handful of idiots, the Virgin Mary has appeared in a drainage hole stain. And she's picked up a few pounds since her last appearance, which was in a grilled cheese or something.
I love the trades made by the Dodgers and Angels last week. Manny Ramirez is 8 for 13 (.615) with 2 home runs, four runs and five RBI in his first three games for the Dodgers. That pace won't last, of course, but in the sorry NL West, he's probably enough to make the difference between winning and losing the division.
I dropped my Angels season tickets a couple of seasons back. I burn out going to so many games. But the team is so good this season, I might just put a deposit down on 2009 tickets to guarantee me a set of four tickets for all the 2008 playoff games.
Notre Dame's decade of failure has dropped them from the top of fans' list of most-hated college football teams. The Ohio State University and USC are now #1 and #2. Mark your calendar: On September 13, the Trojans host the Buckeyes, and on November 29, they host the Irish. Hated v. hated, following hated v. hated. Awesome.
Rivals.com has published its preseason college football rankings:
- USC
- Georgia
- Ohio State
The USA Today Coaches' Poll has the top two spots switched:
- Georgia
- USC
- Ohio State
Non-lawyer reporters are explaining the latest development in the Reggie Bush agent case as one that moves the case closer to depositions and trial. It is not. In California, court orders denying arbitration are immediately appealable. I cannot tell you how many times I've had defendants pull this move, where they file questionable motions to compel completely bogus arbitration agreements just so they can appeal and get the case stayed for a year or two. While it is possible that the courts will not stay the case pending outcome of the inevitable appeal, it would be unusual for the case to proceed any further with depositions or trial before the appeals court (and potentially, the Supreme Court) are done deciding the arbitration issue. If you are looking forward to reading Reggie Bush's deposition transcript, you probably are looking forward to something that will happen in early 2010, at the soonest.
How many times do you think the all-time career wins record will change hands this season? Joe Paterno, 81, has 372 wins and a pretty solid team. Bobby Bowden, 78, has 373, but a softer team and a softer schedule. It could be neck and wrinkled neck all season.
Finally, on a more serious note, rest in peace, Dr. Jordan Phillips, an emeritus professor of obstetrics and gynecology at UC Irvine who championed the use of minimally-invasive laparoscopy. His work made my life a lot easier this year.
